On October 12 2008, Tomorrow’s Youth Organization in Nablus began its first Women’s Computer Course prepared for the mothers of our Core Program students. This pilot course is already enjoying incredible success with its first class of 23 eager and energetic students.
In preparation for this class, Information Technology teacher Sameeha Khaleefa and Outreach Specialist Futoon Qadri embarked on a challenging task of how to model the course after exactly what the women were interested in.
Ms. Khaleefa said, “The mothers told me: our children and husbands are always on the computer. We want to learn as well, we want to know how to use the computer, and we want to know what they are doing.” It was important to her to teach the women how to use the computer and all the benefits they can derive from it.
“It is important for them and their children. It makes their personalities stronger. They are seeking out ways to build their capacity,” said Ms. Khaleefa. “They are so thirsty to learn and they want to be up to date.”
Initially, Ms. Qadri had enrolled eight women for the class. “Of course, we hoped more would come as the word spread, but we had no idea how successful the course would be,” said Ms. Qadri.
By the second week of the class there were almost 30 students. TYO scaled back the number of students to 23 to ensure the quality of the course for each student. TYO is eager to expand this program next session given the immense interest.
