Congratulations TYO Champion, Usama Malik!

Thanks to my family, friends, and TYO for their love and support. Honored to have had the privilege to engage with my inspirational community to reach our goal for TYO. Sorry to have broken my commitment. Recovery and redemption ahead. I will announce my redemption song in the coming days, and provide more context and reflections to end this particular chapter. -Usama Malik On Tuesday, three-quarters into stage three of the Racing the Planet – Jordan 2012 race Usama Malik was forced to withdraw due to a pre-existing ITB injury that worsened over the first couple of days of the Continue reading…

Usama Malik: Non Zero

There’s an interesting debate taking place in some corners of academia these days that is trying to either prove or refute the genetic basis of art, music, aesthetic and the like.  One school finds expression through music and art as an extention of our genetic basis for language, or a social evolution.  The other finds deep biological linkages and evolutionary reasons for music and art.  They both have plausible arguments today, but nascent ones as well, it’s a new school and the foundational knowledge is still being accumulated.  Regardless, whatever school you fall into, and whatever your individual preferences Continue reading…

Racing the Planet Flashback: Sahara Race 2011

In just two short weeks Usama Malik will be Racing the Planet across 150 miles of the Jordanian desert, from Wadi Ram to Petra. His efforts will contribute not only to raising awareness for TYO’s programs, but also help to raise funds for our 50k in 50 days campaign that will allow us to feed healthy snacks to the hundreds of children that participate in our programming each year. Malik’s commitment to TYO began long before this race, when last summer he Raced the Planet through 150 miles of the Sahara and raised 30k to support TYO. During this week-long undertaking Continue reading…

Racing the Planet Games

Our classes broke with the regular rhythm of art, drama, and sports this Wednesday and Thursday for Racing the Planet-themed games, to connect our kids with the race that Usama Malik is running on their behalf. With face paint and team cheers, we got the kids excited to compete against their partner classes. The day’s activities taught teamwork and good sportsmanship – lessons that Nawal and Laura, who teach sports, have been seeking to instill throughout their classes but that many of the kids still struggle with. During the three-legged race, for instance, some pairs collapsed into mutual accusations by Continue reading…

Racing the Planet 2 : We Heart U!

I started running a little over two years ago, shortly after my 35th birthday, in January 2010. A couple of months later I stumbled on the 4 Deserts website, found it familiar (a good friend had participated in two races and had recounted the experience to me at some point), found the Sahara Desert race in Egypt for October 2011, paid thousands of dollars to register for it and locked myself in. I proposed tying my effort to Tomorrow’s Youth Organization (TYO)  – an organization with an honorable mission and commendable people who are intent on positively changing the Middle East one Continue reading…
