Masarah Kana’an was born and raised in Nablus. She studied Early Childhood Education at Al Rawda College until her graduation in 2014. Can you tell me about any changes you have seen in your daughter Malak since she joined TYO’s Core program? How were they before, during, and after? Amal Hamad: A Commitment to Consistent Growth

Amal Hamad is from Einabous village near Nablus. She is studying family development at Al-Quds Open University. She has a great deal of experience volunteering with local and international organizations including the Red Crescent and Medical Relief. Suzan Afaneh: A Palestinian Success Story

Suzan Afaneh is a 26 year old graduate from An-Najah University with a Marketing degree. Originally from Azmout Village outside Nablus, Susan has been a volunteer with TYO in the Core Early Childhood Program for one session. The positive impact of incorporating physical activity into the school day is being seen across the US and around the world as schools have begun to integrate movement and mindfulness exercises into classrooms. Ranging from yoga and meditation to mindfulness classes, administrators and students themselves are introducing these classes to the curriculum. At Marblehead High School in Massachusetts, students take part in meditation in the “Zen Room” in their school before classes. Answering the Call for Creativity

I spent my first Friday in Nablus with one of TYO’s youth volunteers and her family. She has five children and her oldest daughter had just begun her final year of high school. I was there for many hours enjoying lunch and was struck by her daughter’s dedication to studying for the Tawjihi, the matriculation exam used in Palestinian schools. As I helped her review some of her English comprehension, she explained that high marks determine where you can go to university and even dictate the job you can get. An American in Nablus

When you are given a job that requires all of your undivided attention, like teaching English to 240 wonderful Palestinian children, it is easy to put blinders on and solely concentrate on the task at hand. When I was recently asked how I was exercising cross-cultural exchange I thought: I’m doing it every day by teaching English, a foreign language.
