Story Time with Triple Exposure

As we move into the last theme of our session students express themselves through story. Emerging out of exploring their individual identities into what they define as community, this week they expressed change through their stories. A story is a powerful thing, a necessary tool for successful photography. Author Isabel Allende asks us, “What is truer than the truth? …answer: the story.” With storytelling a certain truth comes out that is lost in the nonfictional books of facts. The story allows emotions to surface that emerge from our own lives. The story not only tells us how or what, but Continue reading…

Week Eight Reflections

Nawal When I first stepped into my class eight weeks ago, I was one amongst a room full of strangers.  Everyone, including myself, my translator, the volunteers, and the children had some kind of guard up around them.  We were all new to each other and naturally hesitant to reveal our true selves.  Our interactions were marked by timidity, and one could sense the tension just by the silence that permeated the classroom.  Two short months later, and it seems like the world has been turned upside down. There is no silence anymore in my classroom, but rather an energetic Continue reading…

A couple of months later I stumbled on the 4 Deserts website, found it familiar (a good friend had participated in two races and had recounted the experience to me at some point), found the Sahara Desert race in Egypt for October 2011, paid thousands of dollars to register for it and locked myself in. I proposed tying my effort to Tomorrow’s Youth Organization (TYO)  – an organization with an honorable mission and commendable people who are intent on positively changing the Middle East one Continue reading…

Fighting Societal Pressures facing Nabulsi Youth

No power in society, no hardship in your condition can depress you, keep you down, in knowledge, power, virtue, influence, but by your own consent.  -William Ellery Channing To this day, girls are discriminated against in every corner of the world; Nablus is no exception.  Through my work at TYO, I am aware of how societal pressures affect disadvantaged women in our society every day.  However, sometimes it is easy to think that when women become more educated and financially independent, they become immune to conservative societal pressures.  I even find myself sometimes forgetting that the pressures facing women in Continue reading…
